The Life and History of
Louisa May Alcott
Alcott School is one of only a few schools
in the United States named for a woman. Ms. Alcott was a famous
writer. She wrote Little Women, along with many other books;
such as Jo's Boys, Little Men, An Old-Fashioned
Girl, Eight Cousins, and Rose in Bloom.
Orchard House, the Alcott family home, was the setting
for the story Little Women. Louisa admitted that most of the Marches
in the book were really modeled after members of the Alcott family.
She herself was the irrepressible Jo; her older sister, Anna, was
the ladylike Meg; Elizabeth was Beth, who died at the age of twenty-two
from scarlet fever; May was the talented Amy; and Mrs. Alcott was
the foundation of the home, Marmee.
Louisa May Alcott was a talented writer and a remarkable
person. We here at Alcott are very proud to have our school named
for her.
