CHIMNEY ROCK

by Joshua

Chimney Rock stands 375 feet today. It lost 17 feet in 1972. It lost those 17 feet due to lightning. Chimney Rock was stronger than the pioneers thought. Chimney Rock is the most famous landmark. Many pioneers wrote about it. It got its name from Warren A. Ferris in 1830. Indians called it "The Wigwam". Chimney Rock was the most remarkable thing they saw. It was a good campsite because of a nearby spring. Chimney Rock was often climbed. This Rock was soft. The pioneers carved their names in the rock. It is made of burly clay, volcanic ash, and Arickaree sandstone. Once a kid climbed the highest on the rock and could not get down. So he plunged to his death! Chimney Rock was near Jail and Court House Rock.

Rock Creek Station

BY CORY

Rock Creek Station is located about half a mile from Fairbury, Nebraska. In the 1840s it was an important campsite on the Oregon Trail. In 1860 the Pony Express came through Rock Creek Station. It became Nebraska Station Number Two, one of about 130 such stations on the 2000 mile route. Rock Creek Station was an important stop along the Trail. In the spring of 1861, 23 year old James Hickok was sent to Rock Creek Station as a stable hand, caring for the stock. Hickok said himself that he had killed about three dozen men.
