LINCOLN SCHOOL'S
RURAL RANCHERS 4-H PROGRAM
The Rural Ranchers 4-H program began at Lincoln School in 1987 with five students participating. During the 1996-1997 school year, we had 170 students enrolled and participating in 4-H, along with 35 seventh and eighth grade alumni actively involved in our 4-H program.

The program is located south of Lincoln School in what were called the Franklin Barns, two 50x100 horse barns, now fondly called the 4-H barns.

Animals are jointly owned by all participating sixth grade students and they are responsible for the well-being and care of the animals. Students go down to the barn to care for the animals before and after school and on the weekends.

Students borrow $2,000.00 from a local bank to use as seed money each year for the project, with the proceeds of the 4-H auction as a means of paying back the loan.

Animals raised at the barns include the following:

Sheep (Game)

Peacocks

Emus

Pigeons

Ducks

Cows

Horses

Goats

Llamas

The main objective for the program is to teach responsibility to students through the care and management of animals. Through these opportunities students can gain real life experiences. The two horses at the 4-H barns are used for therapeutic riding classes for handicapped students.

This year we've added something new, a gardening project. The gardening company was awarded a kids gardening grant for 2001 . This grant provides materials for students to expand our garden for spring . The grant is from the National Gardening Association.
