The community of Hastings provides all students with a high quality educational program at a relatively low expenditure per student. The Hastings Public Schools provide:
A strong college-preparatory program offering students both Honors and Advanced Placement programming. In 1996, 70 percent of our students took the American College Test (A.C.T.). Students preparing for the A.C.T., as a group, scored higher than state and national averages in every area (English, math, reading, science, and composite.î) The District, since 1980, has averaged two National Merit Scholars each year (34 students total).
A strong fine arts program offering students courses in art, vocal music, instrumental music (including strings), and drama. For example, the Hastings Senior High Marching Band has received no rating lower than a superior in more than twenty years. Instruction in art, vocal music, and instrumental music, with a teacher specializing in the particular subject area, begins at the elementary level. Our dramatic productions at the Senior High are outstanding and numerous groups have qualified to perform at the International Thespian Conference held annually for outstanding drama students and teachers. Dance instruction occurs through drama, certain vocal music groups, or an extracurricular group known as the Tigerettes.î
A strong career-oriented program offering students complete programming in Business and Marketing, Family and Consumer Sciences, and Industrial Technology. Indeed, Hastings was the first school in the State to offer Industrial Technology programming, focusing on modern technology, to Middle School students. Our foods sequence ties directly into the food services program at Central Community College-Hastings, and our high school is the only high school in the state that offers the extracurricular activity of drag racing.
A strong program of support for students needing additional assistance. The District operates a comprehensive special education program and provides Title I services for students in schools qualified to receive such assistance. Every school has a counselor. In addition, the District provides programming for students limited by their use of the English language and for gifted students. A summer school program is also conducted to provide numerous students with the additional class time they need to be successful.
A highly competent staff. Since 1974, Hastings Public Schools has had four instructors named Nebraska Teacher of the Year with four additional teachers named as finalists (Nebraska only picks five finalists each year with one of the finalists becoming the Nebraska Teacher of the Year). In addition, the District has had:
-Two National Industrial Technology Teachers of the Year;
-An Ed mark National Special Education Teacher of the Year;
-A Presidential Award Winner in the Teaching of Science;
-A Readers Digest American Heroes Award Winner;
-A National Vocational Marketing Teacher of the Year;
-A North American Hemisphere John Philip Sousa Bandworld Legion of Honor Award Winner; and
-Two Peter Kiewit Foundation Nebraska Teacher Award Winners.
Given the quality of the Hastings Public Schools, the District has been repeatedly recognized as one of the schools in the top 10% of the nation by both Expansion Management Magazine and School Match. Both organizations advise companies on the best locations to place their companies.
